But sometimes, you might need professional help or home remedies to alleviate the throbbing pain. Continue reading for some methods that can help with wisdom tooth pain relief.
What Causes Wisdom Tooth Pain?
One of the main and most important things to determine is why your wisdom tooth hurts. Rooting out the cause is how you can rid yourself of the unbearable pain. The common reason your wisdom tooth hurts is that it grows at an incorrect angle, which leads to problems like:
- Infection
- Cavities
- Bacteria
- Cyst
Your dentist or oral surgeon might recommend wisdom tooth removal. Nonetheless, you can reduce the pain while you wait for your appointment.
Home Remedies for Wisdom Tooth Pain Relief
You can find the pain-reducing agents right at your home. Yes, you read that right. You can use remedies like saltwater rinse, hot or cold compressions, and cloves to relieve wisdom tooth pain at home. Below, you can find a list of remedies to help with the pain:
1. Cold or Hot Compress
An ice pack can significantly reduce inflammation and numb the affected area to reduce pain. Hence, you can try pressing it against your cheeks or the affected region to reduce swelling.
You can also apply gentle heat to increase blood flow and relieve some tension, which will help reduce the pain. Go for whatever works best for you, whether hot compress or cold. Compress the area for 15 minutes, with 15 or 20-minute breaks. Also, you can alternate between the two compresses.
2. Saltwater Rinse
Saltwater rinse is the top remedy for wisdom tooth pain relief. Stirring a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water will create a solution that can kill harmful bacteria and keep your mouth clean. Moreover, it can have anti-inflammatory effects too. Thus, rinsing with salt water can disinfect the affected area. You might want to use saltwater rinses at least 2 to 3 times a day or until you can feel the pain going away.
3. Clove or Clove Oil
Clove is effective in relieving wisdom tooth pain, as it is said to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties.
You can boil 4 to 6 whole cloves to make clove water to massage onto your painful gums. Or you can try this for wisdom tooth pain relief:
- Place the whole clove over the painful wisdom tooth.
- Hold it in place with your jaw without chewing
- Leave it there for a few minutes or until the pain reduces
- Spit it out
You can also use clove oil. To do so, put a few drops on cotton wool and then put it on the wisdom tooth that is causing pain. Remove it once the pain disappears.
